You were never destined to marry for love.

As the third child of the Earl of Eastthorn, your purpose is to marry to your family’s advantage, but after one failed engagement already, your prospects are less than promising. So when the Crown calls upon you to infiltrate the lair of an Elven sorcerer in search of a powerful magical weapon, the offer is too good for your family to refuse.

But leaving your respectable home to marry an immortal being of immense power quickly puts you in uncharted territory. Between your secretive, disagreeable spouse and their labyrinthine spire infested with strange creatures, your mission to uncover their secrets is risky from the start. Hiiii :)Sorry to bother you but can I ask a question? It's a stupid ask, so... If you don't want to answer, no worries! About the wedding dress of my MC, this, is written:"The only acceptable part of the day is your dress. The color is seasonally appropriate—pale yellow, as is proper for a summer wedding"So... What about... The others seasons colors? Why some colors would be inappropriate? Are the seasons playing a big role in your IF?Thank you and have a nice day!

Not a bother at all–those are good questions! I mentioned it a bit here, but the seasons are an important element of what’s fashionable to wear in the kingdom where MC lives. The colors for wedding clothes are even more specific: pink dress/green suit for spring, yellow dress/red suit for summer, orange dress/brown suit for autumn, and blue dress/white suit for winter. It’s a cultural convention on what’s “proper” and a part of aligning the union to the natural world. Some people do wear other colors anyway, but there are superstitions that doing so will weaken the union. So Hawk not wearing the “correct” color would be seen as a bad omen.

As far as the larger role the seasons play in the story, they will come up a decent amount! The story starts in late summer and ends in spring, and there are some big seasonal events in autumn and winter, too!

sorry to bother you, but I think there's a bug or coding error somewhere- when someone tries to use a pronoun for the mc, this pops up instead: "$mc.they[_prand]" or "$mc.them[_prand]"
I am trans, nonbinary, and using he/they pronouns, if that helps!

Oops, I accidentally uploaded a test version that included multiple pronoun sets when I fixed another bug! The good news is that I think they’re all fixed, so I guess multiple pronoun sets are available ahead of schedule! Thank you for the bug report!

Talon’s End Devlog: February 2024

Hoo boy, another chaotic irl month has come and gone! Most of the writing time I had went to the Valentine shorts, including a from-scratch rewrite of Shea’s story. Sometimes, the vibe’s just off, and this was one of those times. I think the overall lesson from this month is to not set a release window until beta reading is mostly complete!

I’ll be taking a short writing break for the next couple weeks before getting back to working on the next demo update. I’ll still be checking tumblr every few days during my break, but for now, I hope you all had a good extra-long February!

And a just for my own curiosity…

Which Valentine extra was your favorite?

Evergreen (Hawk)

The King of Faerie (Shea)

Awakening (poly)

Can we convince Hawk to learn to cook with us? Would Shea be willing to teach MC how to cook? Would they teach Hawk too?

I wanna make sweets for them.

Can we give Hawk some of our drawings? Serenade them with the lute?

I intend to emulate Isla's level of sweetness. No secret magic weapon mess. Only sweet fluffy interactions

I don’t want to spoil too much, but depending on your choices, yes to all of the above! Isla would very much support a fluff-only agenda. Even big problems (like marrying a cranky elf to learn their secrets) should be solved with kindness, understanding, and learning how to bake cookies together.

Hi Dani! I love Talon's End so much! I love the writing and Hawk and Shea and the Siblings and Isla and Erich and not so much mom, but I still love her and it's amazing.

Question: How would you describe the usual human clothing of the region? I'm trying to draw my MC (helps with getting to know the character) and I'm not sure of what clothing she'd wear.

Thank you and take care! <3

That’s a super good question! I got a little carried away, but hopefully this is at least kind of helpful!

TL;DR: Women mostly wear dresses; men mostly wear trousers. Regardless of gender, clothes tend to be light and loose in style without a lot of ornamentation. Currently though, elegant, ornamental hairstyles are in, and many people are growing their hair out to take advantage of that. Hair length isn’t particularly culturally dictated or gendered. Clothing colors usually reflect the seasons’ colors in nature, but only members of high society (like MC’s family) are really expected to have whole ensembles of the “proper” colors. For those curious, robes aren’t at all common due to their association with mages.

Dani! I want to play the extras but it doesn't let me add a name or nickname, is a bug?

That sounds like a bug! You should be able to type in both blanks, make your other selections on the page, then either hit enter or the Next button at the bottom. Can you let me know how you’re playing (pc/mobile, browser, and what you’re seeing/not seeing compared to the screenshot)? You can submit a screenshot if you need to. I’ll see if I can reproduce it and get it fixed.

Awakening (Poly Valentine Short)

“I thought I understood things well enough back then, but… in just the last few months, I’ve learned so much.”

“You know, I’m not sure we’ll need those warming stones after all.”

Hawk and Shea settle in on either side of you, their presence comforting as you hear the storm mutedly raging outside.

Play here: Talon’s End Extras

Finally, the last of the Valentine extras is here! It turned out a little shorter than the others, but I may beef it up a bit at a later date. Thanks for your patience, and I hope you all enjoyed the Valentine extras!

Hello! I see another anon asking about the Winds and now, I'm curious too x). In the scene at the waiting room, MC describe "a sculpture of a winged stag whose antlers twist and spiral—a depiction of the West Wind.". Does that mean the Winds are... Plural? That there also a North Wind and so on? If so, are they're all stags??? Sorry, this ask sound silly x)

Those are great questions! The Winds are generally considered a singular consciousness but with four different aspects: one for each direction. Each one embodies different virtues and is represented by a different animal. Their virtues came up briefly in the Halloween extra, but here’s a list of winds and their associations:

  • North: strength, bears
  • East: wisdom, ravens
  • South: freedom, otters
  • West: compassion, deer

Traditionally, when a child is born, their family begins looking for stray feathers on the ground. When they find one, they bring the child along with the feather to a temple, and a priest performs a ceremony to determine which aspect of the Winds the child is aligned with. Most people don’t take it very seriously anymore (unlike in the past where it could dictate what role and profession a child would have later in life), but it’s still a common thing to do–and is usually followed by a celebration for the family! Now that many people live in increasingly industrialized cities, there’s a small industry of people who keep birds specifically for people to use in these ceremonies rather than hunting for urban pigeon feathers. But MC and their siblings were born far enough in the country that their feathers would have been found the old fashioned way.

Hi, I found a bug in your game. When talking to Shea about how they should address you and selecting the option "You can just use my name" while playing an MC that is questioning their gender the following error message shows up in the last paragraph before the next choice: "Error: macro <<save>> does not exist"

Should be fixed now! Thank you for the bug report!

Anonymoussent

Sorry if this has been asked before, but will MC be able to learn magic? :)

I will neither confirm nor deny, but it certainly does sound like something they might be able to do… 🤔
